Cleveland’s neighborhoods each have their own unique identity, from Brooklyn Centre, to Collinwood, and of course Downtown. No matter where you call home, one thing connects all these communities: access to welcoming public libraries!
I’ve come to learn that public libraries are more than places to borrow books. They’re places where people can learn, connect, and feel welcome. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, libraries have long served as spaces of discovery, support, and belonging.
Here are four reasons that Cleveland Public Library continues to provide safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community:
1. Libraries Support Self-Discovery
Libraries give people freedom to explore who they are at their own pace. Through books, memoirs, history, and educational resources, LGBTQ+ readers can discover stories and experiences that reflect their own lives.
For many people, especially young people, a library may be one of the first places they encounter characters, authors, and histories that help them feel seen and understood.
