Fans & Cameras: Jim Lanza – 45 Years of Taking Photos of Unpopular Bands and Weird People

Cleveland Artist Jim Lanza Debuts Never-Before-Seen Photographs from the Underground Music Scene Fans & Cameras: Jim Lanza – 45 Years of Taking Photos of Unpopular Bands and Weird People, a solo exhibition opening Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Sixty Bowls Gallery. This inaugural exhibit showcases never-before-seen and never-before-printed photos taken by Jim Lanza as far back as 45 years ago, offering a gritty, first-hand look at the alternative music scene of the1980s and 1990s. The exhibit features over 100 images, includinglive and candid shots of influential alternative bands who crisscrossed the U.S. including Nick Cave, The Cramps, Dead Boys, Ramones, New Order, Redd Kross, Black Flag, Marilyn Manson, Soundgarden, Cocteau Twins, GBH, Alien Sex Fiend, and many more. “My photographs may not be pretty to some,” says Lanza. “I left the scratches, blurs, and dust in my work. I think of them as battle scars.” Lanza’s passion for music and photography ignited when he received his first camera atage 12. His first concert shots were taken at Cleveland’s World Series of Rock in 1979, capturing Thin Lizzy and AC/DC at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. In the 1980s, Lanza hosted Cheap Heroin, a college radio show on WCSB 89.3 FM (Cleveland State University), championing underground punk, new wave, and garage bands—many of whom later became the focus of his lens. In 1995, Lanza joined Nine Inch Nails on tour alongside David Bowie, Helmet, and Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. After returning to Cleveland in 1997, Lanza was soon back on the road, documenting the controversialMarilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar tour, which was plagued by protests and bomb threats. What began as a few weeks turned into a two-year journey, photographing one of the most notorious tours of the era with a35mm camera and a film camera borrowed from MTV. “After the Manson tour, I returned home to Cleveland, met my future wife Rose, and turned my attention to travel photography,”adds Lanza. For over four decades, Lanza continued documenting the unpopular artists and outsiders—the darlings of college radio and the underground scene—providing an intimate look from the vantage point of both a fan and photographer. Recently, Lanza rediscovered a treasure trove of negatives stored in his basement for decades. Returning to the darkroom for the first time in 35 years, Lanza personally printed these rare images for Fans & Cameras. Many of the photos have never been printed, exhibited, or seen by the public—until now. In addition to his music photography, the exhibition will include a selection of travel photography, featuring the haunting beauty of cemeteries, and a series of very limited edition Snow Globes. Lanza’s work has been featured in the documentary Dead to the World (Marilyn Manson), Long Hard Road Out of Hell (Marilyn Manson book), and The Cramps, Beast and Beyond: A Book About Bryan Gregory. We invite everyone to experience these rediscovered photographs at Sixty Bowls Gallery.
