French virtuoso Alexandre Kantorow sets his sights on two formidable sonatas by Medtner and Beethoven, whose final sonata is infused with powerful drama, playful jesting, and daring innovation, even foreshadowing the toe-tapping rhythms of jazz and boogie-woogie. The pianist also performs wistful preludes by Chopin and Alkan, Liszt’s take on a beloved Bach cantata, and the mystical Vers la flamme, one of Scriabin’s final works.
