There is nothing quite like the energy of a Cleveland community coming together to celebrate where we’ve been and where we’re headed.
I recently had the privilege of stepping out to document the United by Lee Community Picnic, capturing the hard work, bright smiles, and deep history that make our city so special. Armed with my camera, I got a front-row seat to an inspiring initiative that is actively bridging neighborhoods and honoring local legacy.
What is the Lee-Harvard Memorial Project?
At its core, the Lee-Harvard Memorial Project is built around a vital mission: preserving and celebrating the rich history and heritage of Cleveland’s Lee-Harvard neighborhood.
The project is a collaborative initiative between CHARP Education Consulting and the Cleveland Public Library’s Digital Library. Through storytelling, historical documentation, and public art, the project seeks to honor the contributions of individuals, events, and cultural elements that have shaped the identity of this vibrant community over the years — creating a lasting tribute that fosters community pride.
The Lee-Harvard Memorial Project holds profound importance as it serves to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future of our community. By preserving the stories of our residents and the events that have defined us, this project strengthens our collective identity, fosters unity, and deepens the connection among neighbors. It is a true testament to the resilience and spirit of Lee-Harvard!
Bridging Neighborhoods: United by Lee
Taking that mission even further, United by Lee is a collaborative initiative led by The Lee-Harvard Memorial Project (CHARP Education Consulting, Oh Sew Powerful, Inc., and community members) in partnership with the Shaker Historical Society, Shaker Heights Public Library, and the City of Shaker Heights Culture and Engagement Office.
United by Lee is launching a series of events to bridge divides, foster dialogue, and strengthen connections between these historically linked neighborhoods:
- Building Bridges: Strengthening ties between historically linked neighborhoods.
- Fostering Dialogue: Creating open spaces for neighbors to meet, talk, and connect.
- Celebrating History: Sharing the overlapping stories that bind our communities together.

While exploring the picnic and snapping photos of the festivities, I had the chance to speak directly with project lead Charesha Barrett (who leads the effort alongside Paula Coggins).
Charesha spoke passionately about the vision behind United by Lee—explaining how moments like these aren’t just about throwing a great event, but about uniting the neighborhoods, celebrating our shared history together, and planting seeds for a connected future. You could feel that positive, welcoming spirit in the air all afternoon!
